Report on the 12th Kanagawa Prefecture Aikido Federation Seminar

Yokohama AikiDojo participated in the 12th Kanagawa Prefecture Aikido Federation Seminar (第十二回 神奈川県合気道連盟講習会) led by Fujimaki Hiroshi Sensei on Saturday, March 8, at the Kanagawa Prefectural Budokan. This seminar, organized as part of the Kanagawa Prefecture Aikido Federation's official events, brought together practitioners from various dojos to refine their skills and deepen their understanding of Aikido.

Fujimaki Sensei, a senior instructor from the Aikikai Foundation, provided guidance throughout the seminar. He led participants through a structured training session that emphasized key principles such as fluidity, balance, and harmony in movement. Special focus was placed on blending with an opponent’s energy, refining ukemi techniques, and executing throws and joint locks effectively. Participants benefited from hands-on instruction and insightful feedback, which helped them improve their techniques.

Notably, Fujimaki Sensei made a strong effort to make his seminar approachable to beginners. He dedicated a detailed section of the training to ukemi, ensuring that all participants, especially those newer to Aikido, could develop a solid foundation in falling and receiving techniques safely. Additionally, he consistently encouraged beginners to move forward to get a clearer view of demonstrations and better hear his explanations. By breaking down complex movements into simpler steps, offering clear explanations, and demonstrating techniques multiple times, he ensured that even those with less experience could follow along and benefit from the training. He also provided individual guidance to participants, offering corrections and encouragement to help them build confidence in their practice. His dedication to supporting students is one of the reasons he is such a popular teacher at Hombu Dojo, where he is known for his kindness and attentiveness.

The event followed a scheduled program, beginning with the opening ceremony at 13:45 and transitioning into the training session from 14:00 to 16:00. A social gathering was held afterward at Socia 21, located approximately ten minutes from the venue, allowing attendees to further connect and discuss their experiences. During the gathering, the various dojo-cho of the prefecture were invited to give speeches. Guillaume Erard Shihan shared a heartfelt story about how Fujimaki Sensei’s kindness had motivated him to persist in attending Hombu Dojo despite the many challenges he faced after moving from France.

The seminar attracted a significant number of Aikido practitioners, all eager to train under Fujimaki Sensei’s instruction. It was indeed the first official seminar led by Fujimaki Shihan, who had previously attended Kanagawa Aikido Federation-related events, but as otomo for nidai Doshu. The event not only provided an opportunity for technical growth but also fostered camaraderie among members of the Aikido community. As the seminar concluded, participants expressed gratitude for the valuable insights shared by Fujimaki Sensei. Many left the event with a renewed commitment to incorporating the lessons learned into their regular training at Yokohama AikiDojo.

The seminar proved to be a meaningful experience for all attendees, reinforcing their dedication to Aikido and inspiring continued growth in their practice. Yokohama AikiDojo looks forward to future opportunities to train and learn within the broader Aikido community.
